My story

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They don’t just fight poaching - they are conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk and culminating on 17th September, celebrates their many roles, and is raising much-needed funds to support their work.

Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve in Malawi comprises an area of marsh, miombo forest and grassland, with rocky outcrops. The reserve lies along the Zambian border north-west of Mzuzu. The varied habitat attracts a great range of birdlife, while herds of elephants are regularly seen and there are large numbers of hippos.

Peace Parks works closely with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife in developing the Reserve through infrastructure development, community development, rewilding and combating wildlife crime. The rangers also assist with human-wildlife conflict in situations where animals from the park cause problems within the farmlands of the local community.

WRC 2021 will purchase materials such as plastic sheets and cooking pots for overnight patrols and field diaries. Other costs will include meal allowances when rangers travel to attend court cases for prosecution of people involved in wildlife crime. This doesn’t only help them meet field work demands, but also keep their morale high. Such items, which could be funded through the 2022 WRC, include cooking utensils, solar equipment, gadgets for data collection, field tents and sleeping bags.

Give today, and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact. Follow campaign updates on social media with #ForWildlifeRangers

Peace Parks was established in 1997 with the dream is to re-establish, renew and preserve large functional ecosystems that transcend man-made boundaries – thereby protecting and regenerating natural and cultural heritage vital to enabling and sustaining a harmonious future for man and the natural world. Peace Parks shares in and contributes to Africa’s larger vision of establishing a community-centred, regionally-integrated and sustainably-managed network of world-class transfrontier conservation areas.
