My story

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They don’t just fight poaching - they are conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk and culminating on 17th September, celebrates their many roles, and is raising much-needed funds to support their work.

Nyika National Park is located on the Nyika Plateau, a large highland massif located on the international boundary between Malawi and Zambia. As a high rainfall area, the plateau plays a significant role in providing opportunities to conserve the diversity associated with moist grasslands, serves as a catchment for water production and a refuge area for unique species of fauna and flora.

Peace Parks works closely with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife in developing the Park. A law enforcement strategy is currently being implemented. This includes capacity-building, equipping of rangers, the installation of a digital radio communications system, developing a central operations room and a rapid response unit with tracker dogs.

Support from the WRC has provided fuel and rations to rangers to visit crime scenes and to assist in investigations. It has also helped keep rangers’ footwear in good condition; essential given the wet conditions. Cooking pots were well utilised, as were fly sheets to keep work and personal items dry while on patrol. The WRC 2022 would help support the Rapid Response Unit to procure a solar powered deep freezer so that rangers can vary their current dry ration diet with fresh frozen produce.

Give today, and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact. Follow campaign updates on social media with #ForWildlifeRangers

Peace Parks was established in 1997 with the dream is to re-establish, renew and preserve large functional ecosystems that transcend man-made boundaries – thereby protecting and regenerating natural and cultural heritage vital to enabling and sustaining a harmonious future for man and the natural world. Peace Parks shares in and contributes to Africa’s larger vision of establishing a community-centred, regionally-integrated and sustainably-managed network of world-class transfrontier conservation areas.
