My story

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They don’t just fight poaching - they are conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk and culminating on 17th September, celebrates their many roles, and is raising much-needed funds to support their work.

Zambeze Delta Conservation works to protect Mozambique's Coutada 11 ecosystem, and support an estimated 200 livelihoods. Coutada 11 is a 200,000 hectare safari block and is situated in central coastal Mozambique. Our anti-poaching unit consists of a manager, 22 rangers and two helicopter pilots. Half of the unit patrol by motorcycle and the other half patrol on foot. This combination, along with a Robinson R22 helicopter, allows us to cover every part of Coutada 11 and keep poaching to an absolute limit. Lions were reintroduced to our area in 2018, which has increased the demands of our anti-poaching unit. The fact our lion population has more than doubled since then, however, bears witness to the great job this dedicated team is doing.

The Covid-19 pandemic has been exceedingly tough for the conservation world, both mentally and financially. The Wildlife Ranger Challenge was a very welcome diversion and boosted the morale of our Rangers during this tough time. With the safari industry slowly turning the corner, any support from WRC 2022 will assist us to keep our Anti-Poaching Unit at full strength in the field.

Give today, and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact. Follow campaign updates on social media with #ForWildlifeRangers

Coutada 11 is a 200,000 hectare safari block and is situated in central coastal Mozambique. Zambeze Delta Safaris has held the lease since 1994. The block boasts an incredible variety of Habitat including swamp, flood plain, tropical savanna, sand forest and Moimbo woodland. The variety of wildlife is quite incredible too from the rare Livingston's Suni through to the African Elephant. During the civil war the delta's wildlife was decimated. Today virtually all species are back to capacity. A great example is our sable population which was a known 44 in 1994 to over 3000 today.
