My story

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They don’t just fight poaching - they are conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk and culminating on 17th September, celebrates their many roles, and is raising much-needed funds to support their work.

The Wildlife Conservation Society supports the Bauchi State government at Yankari Game Reserve, Nigeria's premiere conservation area. It’s home to the largest population of African elephants in the country amongst many other endangered species such as the western buffalo, roan antelopes, hippo and west African crocodile.

With the increased morale brought about through the efforts of WCS, rangers have become invaluable in the fight against poaching. Rangers have also come to be respected by the surrounding communities and are now seen as key allies in minor domestic issues.

WRC has provided us an opportunity to showcase the excellent work our dedicated and skilled ranger force does in Yankari. It has become a real source of pride amongst our ranger contingent that they are helping fellow rangers in other countries. The proceeds raised through our fundraising efforts so far have allowed us to buy new uniforms and patrol boots for the rangers as well as medical coverage and a monthly top-up on salaries. We have also hosted a parade to celebrate world rangers day, attended by many local leaders and figure-heads, making the rangers feel more valued. Support in 2022 will help us do even more to support the incredible job our rangers do.

Give today, and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact. Follow campaign updates on social media with #ForWildlifeRangers

The Wildlife Conservation Society is an American non-profit international conservation NGO that, for more than a century, has worked to protect wildlife and wild places in over 50 countries as well as many oceans. In Nigeria WCS has provided support to the Bauchi State government at Yankari Game Reserve since 2009. Under a co-management agreement from 2014, WCS has provided rangers with training, field rations and equipment, uniforms, a camping allowance as well as patrol vehicles.
