Wildlife Action Group - Wildlife Ranger Challenge 2022
Wildlife Action Group is taking part in the Wildlife Ranger Challenge to raise awareness of the role of 45 rangers working to protect Malawi's Thuma and Dedza Salima Escarpement Forest Reserves ecosystem, and support an estimated 927 livelihoods.
My story
Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They don’t just fight poaching - they are conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.
The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk and culminating on 17th September, celebrates their many roles, and is raising much-needed funds to support their work.
Wildlife Action Group works to protect, preserve and restore 2 forest reserves and the wildlife that lives there for future generations of Malawians. Thuma and Dedza Salima Escarpement Forest Reserves are in the central region of Malawi along the great rift valley. Covering a total of just over 50,000 hectares, the terrain is rugged and mountainous and home to possibly some of the last remaining escarpment elephants in Africa. Our dedicated rangers patrol both areas on foot. Their role is to protect both areas, monitor wildlife, prevent poaching, engage local communities in conservation, help communities resolve human-wildlife conflicts and assist with low impact tourism.
The WRC has ensured zero loss of jobs throughout the Covid period. We have maintained payment of salaries, recruit 5 new rangers, built 2 new camps to house rangers, conducted Law Enforcement Workshops with stakeholders, continued court monitoring, vehicle maintenance, supplied food rations to rangers in the field, covered workers insurance and medical needs.
With WRC 2022, we hope to realise much-needed funding to build an administration block at our HQ for law enforcement, maintain ranger field rations, BFR ranger training, and provide additional ranger equipment.
Give today, and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact. Follow campaign updates on social media with #ForWildlifeRangers
