My story

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They don’t just fight poaching - they are conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk and culminating on 17th September, celebrates their many roles, and is raising much-needed funds to support their work.

Afzelia (Pty) Ltd is a company which is fully owned and utilised by the Northern Tuli Game Reserve to supply anti-poaching and security to the conservation area. WRC has played a very significant role in assisting Afzelia to keep its rangers employed thereby helping us keep both wildlife and crime in the reserve at manageable levels.

Covid-19 has had huge impacts on the financial wellbeing of the area. As visitor activity within the area reduced it allowed for unwanted and illegal activities within these areas to become more entrenched and prolific, placing additional burden and importance on ranger presence and patrols. Although Covid has eased, we are still far from being back to a situation whereby visitor income is at levels to support the required conservation efforts needed.

Our ranger teams have been pivotal in efforts to fight crime, which includes subsistence and commercial poaching, smuggling, illegal entry and exit from and to Botswana, livestock rustling and illegal grazing within the conservation area. The Northern Tuli Game Reserve is proud to be part of the WRC, thankful to Tusk and especially proud of our ranger teams for ensuring that this unique conservation area is preserved for future generations.

Give today, and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact. Follow campaign updates on social media with #ForWildlifeRangers

The Northern Tuli Game Reserve is situated in the most eastern corner of Botswana with South Africa bordering the reserve in the south and Zimbabwe in the north. The conservation area covers 72,000 ha and is home to the largest elephant herds on private land in southern Africa. The area also boasts healthy lion and cheetah populations. The area has a rich cultural heritage and forms part of the Mapungubwe TFCA, which is both significant for its cultural heritage as well as conservation. We are hopeful that the TFCA agreements will be signed in the not too distant future.
