My story

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They don’t just fight poaching - they are conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk and culminating on 17th September, celebrates their many roles, and is raising much-needed funds to support their work.

Luwire plays a major role in reserve-wide security. The vigilance network provided over 80% of leads related to elephant poaching in the reserve during the peak of the crisis between 2009 and 2015. This contributed to the reduction of ivory poaching considerably and is essential to maintain stability and prevent environmental crimes. The concession acts as southern boundary to Niassa Special Reserve and secures 300kms of Lugenda River.

Tusk's WRC kept our rangers employed, communities safe and wildlife and landscapes protected during the challenges ranging from Covid19 to the insurgency that threatens security in northern Mozambique. This support has also brought our team into an international community.

Luwire has suffered a drastic reduction in its operating budget. While Covid19 seems to be phasing out, attacks by the insurgency in 2021 resulted in a huge threat for tourism. We’ve been forced to shut our doors to tourism again during 2022. In this light, Luwire’s activities in 2022 have been restricted to the implementation of ongoing Security and Law Enforcement efforts and the Community Programme. WRC support in 2022 would enable Luwire to carry out its main mandate with the benefit of not having to reduce its size and composition.

Give today, and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact. Follow campaign updates on social media with #ForWildlifeRangers

Luwire Wildlife Conservancy is located in the Niassa Special Reserve in northern Mozambique. Luwire comprises a small team of dedicated conservationists, many of whom have been in place since its inception in 2001. We seek practical and robust solutions to the challenges of conservation at scale and long term financial and physical security that allows the area under our stewardship to thrive. Luwire staff work closely with the small local communities who must ultimately take up the reigns and guardianship of Luwire’s incredible heritage. Image Credit: Isaac Blackman
