My story

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They don’t just fight poaching - they are conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk and culminating on 17th September, celebrates their many roles, and is raising much-needed funds to support their work.

Luando Strict Nature Reserve is located in Malanje Province in the heart of Angola. The reserve is home to one of the most threatened African mammals, the critically endangered giant sable antelope. Other threatened or locally rare species present are lion, leopard, hippo, forest buffalo and lechwe. The work of the ranger force in Luando has proved critical to curb poaching, allowing the recovery of giant sable populations.

The previous WRC funding was of absolutely crucial importance in keeping our ranger team afloat. We simply could not have afforded to maintain the vast majority of the rangers due to budget constraints. Once the salaries were secured, WRC allowed us to reinforce ranger operations by purchasing food and maintaining equipment and vehicles. This also proved to be of critical importance as we were struggling to face increasing costs. As result of the support received via the WRC, we kept without any disruption the patrolling and law enforcement in Luando Reserve during the pandemic period, and were even able to reinforce some activities.

WRC 2022 would help to keep the bulk of the ranger team effective and in operations, and to continue the protection of the giant sable in Luando.

Give today, and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact. Follow campaign updates on social media with #ForWildlifeRangers

Kissama Foundation is an Angolan NGO established in 1996 focusing on the protection and conservation of biodiversity in Angola. FK develops projects for the study and conservation of flagship species such as the giant sable antelope, marine turtles and forest elephants. It is also involved in the development of learning support materials (books, posters, guides) for children and the youth on biodiversity topics and flagship species. It has a strong commitment with environmental education and skills development of Angolan early career biologists and conservationists, as well as the promotion of community-based natural resources management.
