My story

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They don’t just fight poaching - they are conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk and culminating on 17th September, celebrates their many roles, and is raising much-needed funds to support their work.

Honeyguide empowers communities by building up their in-house capabilities to run Wildlife Management Areas as community-protected areas in an effort to achieve sustainability. Manyara is a high-risk area susceptible to poachers and requires an approach that understands and exploits the opportunities that deter poachers from entering the ranch. The rangers are all registered as Village Game Scouts under the Wildlife Act and have the necessary legal support to arrest and protect wildlife..

Funds from WRC 2021 were used to achieve continued protection of the wildlife, habitat, and community crop. It also ensured WMA rangers and protection activities operated at full capacity, supporting Ranger salaries, fuel, and vehicle maintenance. Between 2019 and 2021, the rangers were able to apprehend 40 poachers, seized 20 firearms and 22 motorbikes.

We need funding from WRC 2022 to support the rangers with their salaries and facilitate protection by providing uniforms, rangers equipment and food rations. It will also support the K9 Unit at Manyara Ranch, an essential tool for protection.

Give today, and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact. Follow campaign updates on social media with #ForWildlifeRangers

We believe that the future of wild spaces in Africa hinges on community-driven solutions, where local communities are in the driver’s seat of conservation. When provided with the right tools, resources and support, communities have the capacity, skills, relationships and local knowledge to run conservation areas that safeguard their natural resources. For the community-driven model to succeed, initiatives must be locally owned and led to be sustainable. Image credit: Monica Dalmasso
