My story

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They don’t just fight poaching - they are conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk and culminating on 17th September, celebrates their many roles, and is raising much-needed funds to support their work.

The North Luangwa Ecosystem (NLE)’s anti-poaching units comprise a mix of DNPW Wildlife Police Officers and Community Scouts. The Rhino and Elephant Protection Unit and Rhino Monitoring Unit form a specialist group to combat poaching and the illegal wildlife trade throughout the NLE and northern Zambia.

The WRC funding has enabled the provision of improved gym equipment, fitness clothing & footwear, cross-fit accreditations and fitness infrastructure for North Luangwa’s rangers. Efforts are now being made to integrate more holistic and relevant fitness for the rangers’ role.

The COVID-19 pandemic poses an ongoing and immense challenge to already marginalised communities. An injection of support specifically for WPO and CS welfare falls in-line with current efforts to overhaul NLCP’s health and wellbeing strategy to improve the physical, mental and emotional fitness of its staff and partners. In order to sustain law enforcement activities, NLCP will utilise future WRC funding to purchase fitness equipment, sports clothing, footwear, cross-fit accreditation courses; and improve infrastructure for its rangers.

Give today, and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact. Follow campaign updates on social media with #ForWildlifeRangers

In the past 36 years, NLCP has grown into one of the most comprehensive and successful protected area conservation initiatives on the continent. NLCP’s operational area comprises of NLNP and significant swathes of the surrounding Game Management Areas (GMA), covering >22,000 km2 of the greater North Luangwa Ecosystem.
